Bathymetric Mapping

Conclude and Communicate!

1.  I think the ocean floor can be measured kind of like the way we measure it. We can stick the poles down and see where is is a lot higher or where it is a lot lower in places.It can also be studied by sounds and the currents. The technology now is much more improved and can use many ways to study the ocean floor. The ocean floor can be used in the military and such because it can be very hidden and give them an advantage. It is also a place that only they know about which would also give them an advantage.

2. flat abyssal plain- flattest, smoothest and least explored place on earth.

3. Based on the mapping survey we did i came up with how most of the ocean floor was pretty much the same level but then there would places where it would be a lot lower, and sometimes and lot higher. I feel like there is many places in the ocean floor where it always almost level but then there is places where it is a lot higher because of underwater mountains, coral reefs, and even volcanoes  Then there is places where it is much lower, like valleys and such.

By using the sonar stick we got an exact measurement  If we were to just eyeball it we would probably have a good idea but wouldn't be sure what it really was. We would also realize how much higher some parts of the ocean floor was and how much lower some parts are.

By using vertical exaggeration while construction our ocean floor we kind of got to expand it and look more closely at it. It is almost like we stretched it out, and although we couldn't see as much we got a more detailed example of a smaller space. We also got a better idea of how much of a difference it was in some places.

4. research question 1- what is the best way to measure the ocean floor using technology?
   research question 2- How can studying the ocean floor help us as a country, or even a world?

5. The value of doing this activity was to show us new ways of technology to study the ocean floor. It also taught me howto find my way around the ocean basically just using the bottom of the ocean. I also learned that there is a lot of higher and lower parts of the ocean floor and i most of it isn't that level.

Dancing Continents

     Throughout studying about Dancing Continents, I have learned a lot. I have learned that the continents do not stay in one spot forever, that they do in fact move around all over the bottom of the ocean floor.I have also learned that we can measure the speed of the plates, which to me is very interesting. Another thing i learned is that since the continents move all over the place that magma, from the earth's crust, comes up onto the ocean floor. The temperature of this causes the earth's plates to move forward and backward. I have also learned that explanation of mountains and volcano and how they came to be. The theory of the sea floor spreading was by Hess in 1960. The theory of continental drifts was that the continents move over the sea floor.The theory of plate tectonics was that the earths crust is broken into 6 different pieces and that any part of that piece of crust could be found on the ocean floor.
       I think this information is very important to scientist. It is also important that they share the information that they gather. By sharing the data with other scientist they are able to get more information from other parts of the ocean floor.By doing this activity i was able to put the countries together how i thought they went. It gave me a chance to really see how the system works because i had to figure it myself. It showed me that the system that the earth created is a very complex structure.I really enjoyed this because i am more of a visual learner and hands on. By doing this i was able to see myself how it all really worked.

Living and Working Under the Sea

     To build a observatory underwater would be a very difficult thing to build. Not only would it be very difficult, there would also be a very big risk involved in doing this.To build a  underwater observatory there is a great deal of things that one needs to include. They use these underwater observatories to study things that they can't study from above water. One thing that is very important in a underwater observatory is the monitors. To be able to to be in one of these observatories one needs to make sure that the pressure and air is in good enough condition for a human. Another way that it is difficult is bringing the internet out onto the ocean. TO get good research and such it is good to have a computer with them that has internet. TO get internet out there they had to put a huge network on the bottom of the ocean and run a wire to where the observatory is.
     These observatories can be very dangerous, but not if you have the right equipment. The right equipment needs to all be monitored therefor the observatory needs to have monitor. Another thing that is always important to have is food for the humans. Also from watching the videos they always make sure to have a lot of cameras to catch every moment they can. Living underwater but still being able to breathe is really an amazing thing. One way that they do this is that each room can have its own pressure. They need lots of pressure to keep the water out of the observatory. Another thing is the air tanks. Each air tank has one hour of air, and they sure make the best out of that hour.Being able to have this observatory is a big step in today's technology. It gives us a chance to explore a part of the world that not many people have explored before.

Why explore the oceans?

 Scientist explore the ocean for many different reasons. Throughout history people started to realize how much of an impact that the ocean has on everyone's daily life. One way that the ocean has a big impact is the trade routes. We use the ocean to trade goods all over the world. This gave people to have a chance to use other country's natural resources that they did not have already. Another thing is that they would have never found America. America was a place no Europeans or anything knew about. They found this land by exploring and that's what makes them so important.
     Although finding America was important to our history the explorers also had many important inventions that still help us today. A long time ago the Chinese invented the compass. The compass helped the explorers navigate all over he ocean. This was important to them because getting lost in their type of boat was extremely dangerous. They all created easier ways to explore around the ocean and trade their goods. The explorers all had their big affect on our society today, without them there may not even be an America.

Why study science?

1. I wanted to take this course because I wanted to learn more about the ocean and how it works. I also really like the ocean.

2. I hope to learn more about the ocean. I want to learn about how the ocean works. I also want to learn more about what is inside of the ocean. Another thing I want to learn about is what is on the bottom of the ocean.
